The Australia route, honestly
Australia is an island with almost no rabies and an extremely valuable agricultural sector, and its biosecurity rules reflect exactly that. This is the most demanding pet route out of South Africa, and there is no version of it that is quick.
Two things define the timeline. First, the rabies titre test (RNATT): your pet cannot enter Australia until roughly 180 days have passed from the date the blood sample was taken. Second, quarantine is mandatory — a minimum of ten days at the Post Entry Quarantine facility at Mickleham, near Melbourne. Not optional, not avoidable, not shortened by good paperwork.
Plan for six to seven months minimum, and treat anyone who suggests otherwise with real suspicion. Quarantine places also have to be reserved and they genuinely run out — so the booking is part of the plan, not an afterthought.
What Australia requires
Every requirement below is mandatory, and the order matters as much as the items themselves.
A valid DAFF import permit
Issued by Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. It must be applied for, granted, and still valid on the day your pet travels. Everything else is built around it.
ISO microchip — before everything else
A 15-digit ISO microchip, implanted before the rabies vaccination and before any of the blood tests. Every subsequent document is tied to that chip number.
Rabies vaccination
Administered after the microchip, by a registered vet, and valid through to travel.
Rabies titre test (RNATT) — and the 180-day wait
Blood drawn after the rabies vaccination and tested at an approved laboratory. Your pet cannot enter Australia until roughly 180 days after the date that blood sample was taken. This is the single longest constraint on the route, and it is immovable.
A panel of additional blood tests — dogs
Australia requires testing for a range of diseases not screened on other routes, which can include Ehrlichia canis, Brucella canis and Leishmania infantum. Requirements and timing differ by species and change periodically — confirm the current panel before booking anything.
Internal and external parasite treatments
Repeated treatments on a strict schedule in the weeks before travel, each recorded on the certificate. Getting the timing wrong invalidates the paperwork.
A booked place in Post Entry Quarantine at Mickleham
A minimum ten-day stay at the government facility near Melbourne. Places must be reserved in advance and they do fill up, particularly around peak periods.

Because Mickleham is the Post Entry Quarantine facility, your pet's flight has to route accordingly — regardless of which Australian city you're actually moving to.
Health certificate, endorsed by the SA State Vet
Your vet issues it; the South African State Veterinarian must officially endorse it. A separate government appointment, and the item most often left out of quotes.

What a Australia quote should include
This is where comparing quotes earns its keep. A quote that looks cheaper is often just a quote that covers less. Before you accept anything, check that every line below is either included or explicitly priced:

Why Australia quotes vary so much
Australia produces the widest spread of quotes of any route we cover, precisely because there are so many places to leave things out:
- Whether quarantine fees are included. The single biggest swing factor. A quote without them isn't cheaper — it's incomplete.
- The domestic leg after quarantine. Melbourne to Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide is a real cost, and it's frequently excluded.
- Which blood tests are covered. Australia's panel is more extensive than any other route, and quotes vary in what they include.
- The import permit. Who applies, who pays, and who carries the risk if it's delayed.
- The State Vet endorsement. Included by some, invoiced separately by others.
- The crate. For a large dog on a long-haul route, this is a meaningful number on its own.
- Currency exposure. Some quotes are firm in rand; others quote partly in Australian dollars “to be confirmed”, pushing exchange-rate risk onto you.
On a route this long and this expensive, comparing quotes isn't a nice-to-have. The difference between the most and least complete quote can run into tens of thousands of rand — and you won't see it unless you have them side by side.
